Information:
The Village Board is made up of five elected residents: a Village President and four Trustees. The Village Board acts as the legislative arm of the Village government. The Village Board’s general statutory powers include the management and control of Village property, streets, municipal services, and finances. The Village Board has the authority to act for the public’s health, welfare, and convenience through licensing, levying taxes, making appropriations, and other necessary means.
The Village Board’s regular meetings are held twice a month, on the 1st and 3rd Mondays. Village Trustees are elected for a two-year term and paid for their attendance at meetings for which a public notice has been posted. The Village Trustees and Village President cannot, during their terms of office, collect salary in excess of the salary provided at the time of their taking office.
The Village President is elected at-large for a two-year term in the spring of odd-numbered years. The Village President is a voting member of the Village Board and serves as its presiding officer. The Village President also signs resolutions, ordinances, and other legal documents. The Village President has the statutory responsibility of maintaining peace and good order and ensuring that ordinances are obeyed.
Democracy is a government of laws. Good democracy requires not only good laws, but laws which are readily available in written form to all who are subject to them, to the public officials and police officers who must administer them, and to the judges and attorneys who must interpret and apply them. It is for this reason that the Village Board of Wales adopted a Code of General Ordinances. The Code represents a contribution of the Village Board to the democratic and efficient administration of the government and affairs of the Village of Wales. After a new ordinance is approved, it is posted in three public places and made part of the Village Code.
The Village Board meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of the month at the Wales Community Building, 216 W. South Street. The meetings starts at 6:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted in the posted agenda.
